OUR STORY
D'Swarte Walvis (The Black Whale) is tucked away in the middle of the Zaanse Schans, surrounded by historic windmills, wooden houses and the wide Dutch landscape along the river Zaan. Our restaurant lives in three monumental buildings, together known by their protected name De Hoop op d'Swarte Walvis.
The kitchen is part of an old merchant's house. The Restaurant and The Regents' Room (Regentenkamer) are housed in a former orphanage. And in the Vleethuis, once a warehouse for whalers, you'll find The Whalers' Bar ('t Vleethuis) and the Windmill Panorama Room (Commandeurskamer).
“Think of it as a museum you can eat in.”
Even the names of our rooms tell that story. The regents and the orphan masters (weesmeesters) once ran the orphanage, and a commandeur was the captain of a whaling ship. Today you dine where they once met, between wooden beams, Delft blue tiles, old maps and paintings. Every beam, tile and window has a story, and while you're here, you're part of it.
We believe great hospitality starts with a warm welcome. Whether you're a local regular or visiting the Zaanse Schans for the very first time, you'll find a relaxed atmosphere, honest food and a team that loves to make your day. Dutch classics and seasonal dishes, our famous Zaanse mustard soup, drinks on the terrace by the water or a celebration with everyone you love: it all fits here.
